Myst's story

How an anxious rescue Malinois inspired my compassionate, force-free approach to dog training in Hungerford and beyond.

A difficult start to life

Myst is a Malinois whom I rescued when she was just six months old. She had spent the start of her life kept in a builders' yard with no exposure to the outside world—no socialisation with people, other dogs, or everyday environments. Because of this isolated beginning, she was an exceptionally fearful and sensitive young dog. For the first few weeks, she would not even step out of the car, let alone manage a walk. Every sight, sound, and unfamiliar presence felt overwhelming to her.

Small steps and steady progress

Helping Myst required boundless patience and absolute trust. I began by introducing her gently to calm, friendly dogs belonging to family and friends. With their steady presence, she found the courage to start taking short walks. A turning point came during a peaceful week away in Wales, exploring 22 secure acres of paddocks and woodland. Free from overwhelming pressure, she learned to relax and explore. Upon our return, she finally felt confident enough to walk proudly on her own. I will be forever grateful in finding Holiday with your dogs.

The power of force-free care

With over 20 years of hands-on dog training experience, I know how vital early development is and why force-free methods are essential. By giving Myst genuine choice and the freedom to express her feelings rather than suppressing them with aversive tools, her self-belief continues to blossom every day. Her transformation is a reminder that no dog is beyond help when guided with empathy, understanding, and positive guidance.

"Every anxious dog deserves patience, empathy, and someone willing to listen. With kindness and force-free guidance, true confidence is always possible."
